The Hardware Buyers Miss (Until It's Too Late)

Most people think about fence panels first and hardware second. Then they're halfway through a job and missing the right post length, the right rail profile, or the right bracket for a corner join. We've put this page together so you can sort your complete hardware list before you start, not after.

Steel Fence Posts

Steel fence posts are the foundation of any fenced run. We stock galvanised steel fence posts in a range of heights and profiles to suit Colorbond, tubular, and weldmesh fence systems.

  • Intermediate posts — for straight fence runs between corners
  • Corner posts — heavier profile for 90-degree direction changes
  • End posts — for fence terminations against walls or existing lines
  • Gate posts — reinforced for single or double gate installations
  • 1200mm — Post Length: 1800mm | Profile: 65x65mm SHS
  • 1500mm — Post Length: 2100mm | Profile: 65x65mm SHS
  • 1800mm — Post Length: 2400mm | Profile: 65x65mm SHS
  • 2100mm — Post Length: 2700mm | Profile: 75x75mm SHS

Fence Rails

Rails connect the posts and carry the fence panels. We stock top rails, intermediate rails, and bottom rails in steel — standard 6m lengths. Cut-to-length service available on request.

Compatibility Guide

  • Colorbond — Post Profile: 65x65mm SHS | Rail Type: C-section or angle | Notes: 3-rail for 1.8m+ panels
  • Tubular (Gal) — Post Profile: 40mm round or SHS | Rail Type: Flat bar or tube | Notes: Rail-and-picket system
  • Aluminium Slat — Post Profile: Aluminium SHS | Rail Type: Aluminium extrusion | Notes: Match to slat supplier system
  • Weldmesh — Post Profile: 50x50mm SHS | Rail Type: Flat bar or wire clip | Notes: See weldmesh page for detail

How to Calculate Your Hardware Quantities

Getting the quantities right before you order saves time, money, and a second trip. Here's the straightforward method for a standard Colorbond fence run:

  • Posts: Divide your total fence length (in metres) by 2.4 (standard bay spacing) and add one for the end post. Add two more for each gate opening (one per gate post side).
  • Rails: Multiply the number of bays by three (top, middle, and bottom rail per bay). For fence runs over 1.8m in height, use four rails per bay.
  • Post caps: One cap per post — don't skip these. They're cheap and they double the life of the post.
  • Rail clips: Three clips per rail (one at each end, one in the centre). Buy a pack of ten for every three bays.

For L-shaped or U-shaped fence runs, break the run into straight sections and calculate each separately. Corner posts count for both sections. If you're unsure, send us your site plan or a rough sketch and we'll do the takeoff for you at no charge.

Post Accessory Questions

Use a 2400mm post with a 65x65mm SHS profile. Embed 600mm minimum into concrete footings. On loose or sandy soil, increase to 750mm. Gate posts should be 75x75mm SHS to handle the additional load.

We stock steel fence rails in standard 6m lengths. Cut-to-length service is available on request. Allow for overlaps at post locations when calculating quantities.

A capping rail on top of a Colorbond panel run is optional but recommended. It prevents the top edges of panels from lifting or warping in high-wind conditions and gives the fence a clean, finished appearance.

Post caps seal the open top of a hollow steel post to prevent water ingress. Without a cap, hollow square sections collect water and corrode from the inside out — significantly reducing post life.

Yes. Metal fence post brackets (surface-mount or bolt-down base plates) allow you to secure posts to an existing concrete slab without in-ground installation. Common in commercial settings, gate installations, and deck fencing.

Post Caps

Post caps seal the open top of a hollow steel post to prevent water ingress — without them, hollow square sections collect water and corrode from the inside out, significantly reducing post life. Available in flat, pitched, and ornamental styles, sized to match standard 65x65mm and 75x75mm SHS post profiles.

Fence Brackets & Connectors

Available bracket types: rail clips, corner brackets, end brackets, adjustable brackets, and metal fence post brackets (surface-mount). Metal post brackets allow installation on concrete slabs, footpaths, or paved surfaces without in-ground installation — common in commercial settings, gate installations on paved driveways, and deck fencing.
